And willingness to be vulnerable, and… in my experience I have found that the following factors have the greatest influence for me:
Availabilty
Capability
Reliability
“Do they get me”
Availability is about having both the time and space to engage. Capability is about one’s ability to be present and to hold a space that encourages vulnerable thoughts, feelings and emotions to emerge and be expressed. Reliability, for me, means that a person can be counted on to be both available and capable almost all of the time. “Do they get me” really expresses that each of us is a unique individual with unique needs… unique ways of expressing our thoughts, feelings and emotions… and, unique views and perspectives about the world. Of course there is more to vulnerability, but it seems to me that this is a good starting point.
